I have a number (between 20 and 35) of movies on VHS, that I'd like to transfer to DVD. In preparation for jettisoning the VCR altogether ;).
I am just starting my research, but so far I figure I have two meta-options, and an unknown number of possibilities within those two. I could use my computer as the transfer point, which requires (possible purchase of) a video capture function, lots of hard drive space, and a DVD burner (I have the second two, it's the first one I'm not sure about).
Or I can purchase a VHS/DVD player/burner.
Does anyone have a preference for method? If so, any suggestions about hardware? Models to defnately avoid?

My dad does this. I have no idea how, except that I think it involves attaching a VCR to his desktop. If no one responds, ping me and I can email him for details. He leaves for a road trip on Thursday and won't be back for a month, though.

It has been pointed out to me that this process will involve purchasing *some* equipment, and that commercial movies are probably by now in the bargain DVD racks :). Which greatly shrinks the list to a small handful I can in good conscience ask a friend to transfer for me :).

I have a device which both plays and records VHS and DVD. You can put a VHS tape in and then press record onto DVD - the only drawback is that it record in real-time, so you basically have to play the whole movie through to copy it. I'm not home, so I can't tell you the brand name, but it has worked well and is my only DVD player.
