Tears of the Sun
Mar. 8th, 2003 01:23 pmWent to see the new Bruce Willis movie last night. It's set in Nigeria, in the middle of the political unrest that's been going on there for decades.
I had to walk out. I couldn't take it. Jay gratefully followed me, pleased that I had given him an opportunity to do the same thing.
I've only ever walked out of two other movies in my life, and one of them was when I was 10.
I simply realized that I wasn't in a headspace to be able to ponder the atrocities mankind can inflict upon itself. Maybe in a year, but now now. The mutilation of the nursing mother was what sent me over the edge. Gee, wonder why. I'd been able to handle it up till then, but that was the straw. Jay simply found it was becoming too real for him. Too close to his own past, I guess.
One thing that struck me. Most of the supporting cast were clearly Africans. Not Afro-Americans. They had that blue-black skin tone that announces Massa was *never* in their ancestor's huts. As well as the facial structure associated with the Sub-Saharan continent. At first I wondered where they found so many actors, then I realized these actors are probably refugees from a situation very similar to what's being represented. Kind of put a new perspective on the facial expressions being filmed. The haunted look in the eyes might not be an act.
