I can't help looking at gowns like this, with the exposed bonings, and thinking "Psst! Honey, I hate to break it to you, but you forgot your blouse!"

Why? I see corsets like that all the time at the Merc ;)

I've been focusing on historical costuming more recently. That kind of corset is *underwear*.
:D

Well, sure, but so are half the things 21st-century women wear on a day to day basis, compared to the 19th or 18th century. Western civilization is becoming progressively more naked.* Why, I bet when we live in climate-controlled space habitats everyone'll just be wearing boxers and panties, and people will complain that "that wedding dress is really just a negligee!" :)

* Note that I do not specifically endorse this, as I think high-necked, long-skirted gowns can be really, really hot.

Hmm...which could lead to the original form of marriage - public consummation?

Full circle and all that...

Very likely! We are trending more and more towards a panopticon society anyway -- ubiquitous surveillance would make every act a public one.

when nudity becomes the norm sexy will be all covered up...

Well, it's nicer than my comment: "Nice underwear. . . where's your dress?" Which I've said to people who have provoked me.

All kidding aside, I hate exposed/obvious boning. It's NOT hard to sew the casings only to the lining and keep the boning more or less unobtrusive (which is how I do corsets for "outerwear".)

You say that like it's a bad thing...

Um... is there a reason you were looking at wedding gowns?? Enquiring minds want to know. ;-)

Nothing interesting. One part 'Wow, the designs lately are a train wreck...' and one part 'I could so make that cheaper...'

See, to the unedumicated, that might just look like a nice design element. I don't know a whit about fashion or sewing, so I thought, 'huh, not bad' but if it had gone around horizontally, like a wine barrel, it might have been less attractive. ;)

Well, I've been doing too much historical costuming recently to let it go :). The 'Bar Wench' (http://www.buycostumes.com/Category/0/Product/18003/ProductDetail.aspx?REF=AFC-datafeed&AID=10273928&PID=2100672&SID=NAT49407-sc3606239) look is the historical equivalent of the Hooters uniform :}. You don't show off your underpinnings, it's tacky :).
