'This reminded me...some years ago, I did a battle which involved a 2-mile march to the field in full kit. It was an absolutely boiling day.
A jogger in minimal sports gear (shorts and T-shirt) came running along in the opposite direction.
From the middle of the pike ranks (most, in addition to their woollen coats and breeches, wearing helmets and back-and-breast armour), a voice piped up, perfectly guilelessly:
"He must be bloody mad doing that in this heat!"'
