It's early spring, so I'm getting my usual "Shovel out the place" bug. I need a judgement call, though, on one item.
My letterman's jacket.
On the one hand, I haven't worn it in 15 years. I've just carted it from house to house, closet to closet, since I was a sophomore in high school.
On the other hand, I *did* earn it.
Tough call.

Date: 2005-02-06 07:03 am (UTC)In the end, you will give up every thing you have. There will be the things you send away from you, and in the very end, there will be the things you leave.
Your letterman jacket will not be one of the things you leave. If it were *that* important, you would not be considering getting rid of it now.
So, sometime in the next fifty years, you are planning on getting rid of that jacket. Now, either you were planning on letting it go on the wings of chance, or you were planning on giving it to someone.
Are you waiting for someone to come sit next to you and listen while you tell them about how you earned this jacket?
If you are, you need to keep it until that someone comes along.
If you are not, if you do not see your earning of that jacket as being special to anyone but you, then you don't need to keep the jacket anymore. You will always have the earning.

Then again... if you haven't worn something within 6 months, you're supposed to toss it, and you're not in high school anymore.
But.. it's not a coat anymore.. it's a trophy, right?

Date: 2005-02-06 06:55 pm (UTC)When I lettered and earned pins, I didn't care enough to get a jacket. I covered my letter with the corsages I got at dances and during cotillion to the point that the letter was no longer visible.
My letter went missing when I was in college, and my mother is notorious for throwing things away, whether they are junk or have heaps of sentimental value. I assumed that she tossed it long ago. I found it in the attic a few months ago and was thrilled to have my hands on it again.
